Shift swaps and sick call coverage for hospitals
Physicians, APPs and nurses swap or give away shifts themselves, and Capillary rules out anything that double-books them or cuts into rest. A sick call goes to the people who can work the shift.
Swap passes every check
Your Saturday night for Kim's Tuesday day. Both keep at least 12 hours of rest.
Not offered
Lee works the next morning, so your night would leave 8 hours of rest.
06:30 Call-out reported
Kai is out for Saturday's evening shift, 15:00 to 23:00.
06:30 Offered to the group
Any physician whose rest, shifts and time off allow it can take the shift. The extra pay rises each hour.
11:00 Deadline
If nobody has taken it, the scheduler picks cover, with backup listed first.
What a department gets
Only swaps that pass
Capillary offers only trades with no double-booking and at least your minimum rest for both people.
How trades workApproval if you want it
A swap can go through when both people agree, or wait for the scheduler's approval. You choose.
Write a swap policyThree-way swaps
When no colleague can swap with you directly, three people often can.
How three-way swaps workFree, whichever app your group uses
Find a swap reads your group's schedule from a calendar link or file.

Turn this on and everyone who can work the shift gets an email. The first to say yes takes it.
How sick calls workExtra pay that rises to a cap
An offered shift can carry extra pay that rises until someone takes it. Capillary records the amount and does not pay it.

Common questions
- Does the scheduler have to approve every trade?
- Only if you want.
- Can an APP take a physician's shift?
- No. Physicians trade with physicians, APPs with APPs and nurses with nurses, and cover works the same way.
- What if nobody takes the shift?
- At the deadline, 4 hours before the shift unless you change it, schedulers get an email asking them to choose cover. They pick from a list with backup at the top.
- Who can see why someone called out?
- Only schedulers.
